Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is a major cause of acute hepatitis and is widespread among injecting drug users, with up to 90% being positive for antibodies to HCV. HCV infectionprogresses with an indolent course and remains benign in the first few years, but the majority(>50%) of HCV-infected individuals eventually develop chronic HCV infection. HCV was first reported in 1989. It is now known that HCV is an enveloped virus that contains a positive strand RNA genome of about 9400 nucleotides. Antibody against HCV is found in most patients who are infected with HCV. BioTracer™ HCV Rapid Card is a qualitative rapid test to detect of antibodies against HCV in serum, plasma or whole blood. This test is intended for professional use as an aid in the detection of antibodies against HCV.
