The National Science Museum in Daejeon is holding a special
exhibition about Korean traditional boats. The vessels, which are
being displayed in the permanent exhibition room, are to showcase
the brilliant shipbuilding technology of Korea in the past.
A total of 17 ship models, each about one meter in height, are on
display. Most are fishing vessels and a few are container boats
that carry sand and other materials. Some examples include got-bae,
a fishing boat that stays in one place; joongseon-bae
(joongseon-ship), the biggest fishing boat of its kind; and
nak-bae, (nak-ship) a boat specialized in catching hairtail, yellow
corvine and pomfret from March to November.
The exhibition also provides a look at the making of ancient ships.
To allow a better view of the inner structure of the ship, the
museum has built cut away models.
?he point of this exhibition is to analyze the mechanics of old
ships in Korea made with local technology and to promote the
maritime potential of the country,?said Kim Yong-sik, the director
of the museum.
